I think the VIP service is awesome and I am very happy to pay for the excellent service provided by GS and the amazing potential of enabling users to access a universal music collection for any device from any place…. this is the future, no doubt!

This is a great inside-look at the inner workings of Grooveshark. This site is a staple to my every day life, if I’m on my computer I’ve got Grooveshark running with a great tracklist at all times.

Hi there. I just needed to let you know that some elements of your web site are hard to comprehend for me, as I’m color blind. I suffer from tritanopia, however there are other sorts of color blindness which will also experience issues. I will read the largest part of the webpage OK, and those areas I have difficulties with I am able to understand by using a special browser. Neverthless, it’d be cool if you could consider us color-blind folk when undertaking your next web site design. Cheers.

Indeed a great app. I have been using it for my music. I think it might just replace Last.fm for my subscription as well. :) Also I love the Yellow on their site. I know that is odd but still!

Personally I love grooveshark. I signed up for the vip last august and have not looked back. I listen to it all day everyday and I don’t know how I was ever able to work without it.

I really like to see that they take care of the bands as well as their users. It shows how bands will be able to promote their music in the future. I can see the smaller bands using the stats from grooveshark to build their fanbase, it would help them determine where to play concerts ect.

Great article, thoroughly covered the topic. However, I can’t help but disagree with the assessment that:

“People were downloading music through file sharing networks for free, but their magic question was “why?”. The answer wasn’t “because it’s free”.”

People most definitely use file sharing networks like LimeWire or torrent because they’re free. If you had to pay to use The Pirate Bay or Limewire but it still contained the same content, its user base would be a tiny fraction of what it is now.

As you mentioned, Grooveshark’s success stems from the fact that it does make music content more accessible. Though Grooveshark’s depth of content might make some difference, the kicker is that Grooveshark is financially accessible (i.e. free). I’d love to see what percent of their user base has opted for the paid VIP version. Like a lot of other really compelling social media interfaces, I believe that monetizing Grooveshark is going to remain a huge challenge.
